If you would have told me at the beginning of the year that one of the most powerful weapons to come out of Forsaken would be a legendary SMG from a PvP quest, I would have called you a liar. Thankfully, we never had that conversation and I like to collect pinnacle weapons and other items in the game simply for the sake of having them. Because that’s exactly what happened, and if you haven’t taken the time to grab your own The Recluse, I’m going to make a strong case for why you should.
Since Season of the Drifter dropped, horde game modes have been a mainstay in Destiny, and The Reclusive absolutely thrives in those arenas. It’s a literal bullet-hose with excellent recoil that shreds common enemies and Guardians alike, and since it’s a pinnacle weapon and comes fully masterworked, you generate orbs of light for days. With the recent nerfs to exotic pieces that return super energy, this is an invaluable asset. That also means its two most important perks, Feeding Frenzy and Master of Arms, are almost always active. The first increases your reload speed when you get a kill, while the second, something of an exotic-lite perk, increases damage for a short time when you get a kill with any weapon. That includes, you guessed it, The Recluse. Combining these two perks makes cutting down even the tougher enemies a cinch, even if they have an elemental shield active. Did I mention that it uses primary ammo and has Void affinity?

With the release of Shadowkeep and its Vex-driven end-game content, you can imagine why The Recluse is even better now than it was before. While the Vex can sometimes spice things up by alternating their shield affinity to Arc or Solar, they are primarily Void. The Recluse cuts through them with ease, detonating shield after shield for bonus AoE damage. Once Master of Arms gets rolling, it’s hard to stop it. That’s why The Recluse has one of the fastest time-to-kill rates in the entire game with the perk active.
Because of its excellent recoil control, fairly decent range, and ridiculous power both with and without Master of Arms active, The Recluse is also an absolute beast in the Crucible. It’s definitely a worthy replacement for any shotgun you might be using in your secondary slot, and my preferred weapon of choice. When Master of Arms procs, you can melt multiple Guardians with a single clip, especially if you’re landing headshots at close range. They just vanish, poof!
So, have I convinced you yet? Do you see why this is an S-tier weapon? Good. Now, here’s how you get it:
Step 1
Pick up “From the Mouths of Babes” from Lord Shaxx.
Before the release of Shadowkeep, it was impossible to obtain this quest after Season of the Drifter had ended. The good news is they’ve put it back into the game.
Step 2
Complete the Crucible Triumph “The Stuff of Myth”
This will be the most difficult step for people that don’t enjoy PvP. It requires a good deal of Crucible wins, which may make this a time-consuming effort for some. With the release of Shadowkeep, the Competitive mode is no longer a thing. Instead, you’ll have to play matches of Survival to earn Glory.
· Win matches in the Crucible. (~100)
· Reached Glory rank “Fabled.” (2100)
Conclusion
The fact that this is a Crucible weapon may turn off some players, but I highly encourage you at least try to get it. The Recluse is incredibly versatile and useful all over the game, which makes it a must-have for your arsenal. While it may take you a little longer to acquire if the Crucible has never been your thing, the grind and effort will pale in comparison to the satisfaction in the end.
