The fabulous fatalities are back!
Yesterday Netherrealm Studios held a Community Reveal Event livestream for Mortal Kombat 11, detailing not just the first actual footage of gameplay, but also the premise of the story, a montage of fatalities, customization and some new characters.
Gameplay
If last you played Mortal Kombat X then you’ll see plenty familiar in this entry. Noticeable changes are the meter being broken up into two bars now, one for offensive moves and one for defensive; giving you a bit more freedom to be creative. The X-ray moves have been changed into a Fatal Blow mechanic…which is virtually the same, but functions a little differently now that it’s not part of one shared meter. Fatal Blow appears whenever the Kombatant is around 30% of their health. And even if you miss your chance of using it, the opportunity will return after a cooldown period.
Character variations also make a return, but now with the added bonus of modifying them a la the Injustice 2 gear system. But fret not you who wants a pure online bout, for those in the competitive scene or for those looking for an equal playing field, this can be turned off/ignored.
Story
The story picks up right after MKX when Raiden became Dark Raiden. Upset with the balance being broken — realm-wise and time-wise — the uber Elder god Chronica (Kronika?) enters the fray by resetting everything. This leads to all sorts of timey-wimey antics, with some characters meeting different incarnations of themselves.
Assorted musings
- A notable change is that Sonya Blade will now be voiced by Olympian, UFC Hall-of-Famer and WWE superstar, Ronda Rousey. This has caused some discomfort within the fandom, but YMMV. For those interested in the whys, here’s an article by Salon with the details. I’m kind of torn on the subject myself.
- Geras, a newly introduced character, is a big brawler guy with some nifty time manipulation moves.
- Pro eSports player, SonicFox, has an interesting breakdown with pros and cons for those interested.
- My little brother, who is a big MK fan in general, was left feeling meh by the reveal.
And that was it for the big MK11 reveal. Tell us your thoughts in the Komments below and stay tuned for more Koverage of Kool Kombatants Koming soon to Parallax Media. (I will not apologize for the cleverness)
Mortal Kombat 11 launches on the 23rd of April 2019 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC.
